The Pixel 3 specifically
The Pixel 3 is an odd case: US units had a working eSIM while units sold elsewhere had it disabled in software. Since most Pixel 3 handsets outside America are the disabled variant, assume it will not work and check with *#06# before counting on it.
What this means for your trip with a Pixel 3
The eSIM is added as a second line, so your own SIM and your own number stay exactly where they are. You set the eSIM as your data line for Oman and leave your usual number for calls and texts.
The service is data only — no calls, no SMS and no Omani number. WhatsApp calls, FaceTime and Messenger all run over data, so those keep working normally.
Check your own handset in under a minute
Open the dialer on your Pixel 3 and dial *#06#. If an EID appears alongside the IMEI, the phone has an eSIM.
It must also be free of a carrier lock. That is the one thing worth confirming before you fly — a locked handset will refuse the profile, and finding out at the airport is too late.
What you can do instead
This model takes a physical SIM only, so no eSIM service — ours or anyone else's — will work on it. If you are travelling with a second handset that supports eSIM, the plan can run there and be shared over a hotspot.
